L01 : Principles and purposes editing film

Throughout this essay I am going to discuss the principles and purposes of editing.

Collage:

"A collection of images placed into one sequence".

When you place images together your audience interprets them and trys to understand the meaning of the images that they are seeing on the screen , they do this by taking in information that they see in the various different shots.

One image must be relevant to another e.g. one reveals information about the other allowing the viewer to understand what is going on further. Here is an an example of a collage

Tempo

Tempo can be used to set the pace of a scene for example if you are filming an action scene in a movie with speeding cars , you want the editing style to be fast paced. 

You can achieve this fast paced feel by editing in the correct way the best technique is to make each clip very short so that the camera moves to many different angles. Or alternatively if you were filming a scene with a lot of dialogue then you might consider slowing down the pace of the film by keeping the camera in one place and allowing each shot to be longer.

Condensing and Expanding Time

The condensing and expanding of time is used in many different ways in film.

It can be used to create montages which are

supposed to make the viewer think that more

time has passed than it actually has.

It can be used to get rid of unnecessary footage and to

keep the film moving along at a steady pace.

Arranging the Order of Events

Different producers organize the sequence that events are shown in differently.

This can be used to add in things like flashbacks , visions , dreams , cutaways and things of that nature in which the viewer is shown a clip that does not seem to flow with the sequence of events.

Shot/Reverse Shot

A shot reverse shot is basically a cause and effect type setup for example two people will be having a conversation and the camera will be focused on the face of the person talking , when the other person responds to what they have said the camera changes to them..

Eyeline Match

An eyeline match is used to show us how a character in the movie sees the events going on around them for example their might be a pen that falls on the floors on screen and the next shot is the pen on the floor from the perspective of a character.

Cutaways

Cutaways are used to give the viewer some additional information relevant to the story line or plot of a film , a prime example of a cutaway can be see in the comedy television series family guy where the main protagonist "Peter Griffin" constantly has hilarious cutaways.

This essay explains and analyses the various developments in film and editing styles , each producer has his or her own individual style for filming and editing and this is made clear by the thousands of movies out their that all provoke different emotions and feelings from their audience.

In order to keep your audience engaged it is essential that you try and develop on what has already been done and come up with your own unique twist on the styles that are already present.

I have researched into four of the most influential producers of film over the last 250 years , they are renowned for changing , developing and discovering new techniques that have shaped what we see on our screens today. 

Each of these producers has their own unique style but the one thing that they have in common is they all came up with something new , and that is how you succeed in any industry.

These four producers I have researched are 

The Lumiere Brothers, 

D.W.Griffith, 

Sergie Eisenstein

 David Fincher

The Lumiere Brothers

The Lumiere brothers are two french men who were born and raised in a small town call Besancon , France.

The two brothers decided that they wanted to try and create "moving images"

The two became famous when they released their first film "Arrival of a train" people all around the world were amazed by this amazing new thing that had come along , Film. 

Compared to modern day films their movie was incredibly simple , it was more or less what we would call stop motion. The transitions on the screen would have been jumpy , black and white , poor quality and the film would have been very short but all these points aside these brother are arguably the pioneers of the entire film industry.

David Llewelyn Wark

David Llewyen Wark was an American man , born in 1875.

Although David is one of the pioneers of the film industry some of his work is now consider to be incredibly controversial and in the eyes of most offensive. He created films in a time where African Americans were considered to be lower class than white people and this could be seen in his work.

David created a silent film that was narrated by words that popped up on the screen after somebody has spoken , sort of like an old fashioned subtitle.

"Birth of a nation"

Sergie Eisenstein

Sergei was a Russian film director and was the first person to come up with the montage technique , this technique is still used in film today often when the protagonist goes on a journey and the director wants it to take up less time on the screen.

This video from the comedy film "Team America" explains montages perfectly.

David Fincher

Was one of the first people to realize how important it is to have the correct lighting in your shots and people inteprit things differently depending on if they are light of dark, for example nighttime can be used to make people think of scary things where as in the daytime your not really thinking of that sort of thing.

David Fincher was the director of such films as Sleven , Fight Club and The Game which are all action and crime films , lighting is now something that all good film makers take in to consideration that they are recording their productions.

Scene Two

Location

(In the car parked up next to a main road)

Ricky (Jack) - LAPD Man

Ali (Charlie) - Yeah and what (quietly and under their breath)

Ricky - Your'e a badman bruv . . Badman

Scene Three

(In the car at the road side)

Ricky - (Starts beatboxing)

Ali - We got the chicken licken were rocking and were flicking

Scene Four

(Outside Macdonalds)

Ricky - Right youv'e got ten seconds till you start mac daddy

.. And Go

News reporter - So Mr.G why are you on hunger strike ?

Ali - In the struggle for justice me is willing to lay down me life just like Martin Luther Van Dross did.

Camera man - These are qiute nice these chicken dippers

News reporter - Ooo what sauce are you going for

Camera man - I think its BBQ

Ali - (Moving around , stuggling)

Moves Towards Chicken Dippers whilst still chained to the fence

L02 : Scenes from Ali G Indahouse

These are the scenes from the film that I am going to be re-enacting for my film and editing techniques project , I grew up watching this film and know every scene off by heart so wont have any trouble putting this prodcution together. Im going to have this videos close to hand the whole time so that I have some material to refer to if I get stuck at any point.

L02: Locations for filming

Scene One

Im going to start with the car scene at the beggining of the film

So Im going to park my car outside a house that looks similar to

the one in the film.

I have a car and a full driving license so I will
be using my blue vauxhall corsa to recreate this scene.

I am also going to be playing the same music as he
does so that the audience will find it easier to link
the two productions together and grasp the similiarites.

Scene Two

Once in the car "Ali G" drives through a built up area

with loads of houses. I'm going to be driving round

my local area as it somewhat resembles the same locaton

as they used in the film.

This scene involves various different camera shots of

the car driving past. Point of view shots from the

drivers seat. Shots of the speakers in the car and shots of the

surrounding area out the passenger windows.

Scene Three

The next scene is in his car , him and the other main character Ricky are beatboxing and swearing at passing police cars , this can be filmed in several locations all I really need to do is pull up at the side of the road.

Scene Four

Scene four is outide the town hall in Staines but I can still recreate

this scene if I find a spiked short fence in a busy area.



L02 : Chosen Production

This is the film that I am going to be re-enacting Ive chosen it because I know this film inside out

and think its simple enough to do a really close copy of. Iv'e got it on DVD I know all the scenes really well I enjoy the film so im not going to get bored during the making of this project.

An important thing to bare in mind when making a film is your budget,

This was a fairly low budget prodcution and it genereated millions of pounds of revenue.

The directors managed to keep costs low but doing alot of the filming in public places , inside homes and in film studios. 

 I am confident that I can recreate some of the best bits of this comedy

film to a high standard.

In order to do this I am going to need to storyboard

the scenes from Ali G and put my own homemade

twist on them.
